I’M OBSESSED | We Are Trees

Bandcamp | Facebook

The moment I saw that We Are Trees had a song entitled “Dear Chan Marshall,” I was all ‘hell yeah, I’m up for the ride.’ (I’m a huge Cat Power fan and any reference to her will get me giddy.) That fact alone, for me, warranted them a listen–and I was not disappointed. (more…)

EAR CANDY | Target’s Free Holiday Album

Call it selling out or call it making a living, but I mentioned a while ago that California lo-fi buddies Best Coast and Wavves recorded a song to be part of Target’s holiday album, entitled The Christmas Gig.

Well, now the compilation of holiday music, which also features indie darlings Coconut Records (Jason Schwartzman, anyone?) and Jenny O., is up for free download! Listen to these peppy tracks while studying for finals, working long hours at the office, or decorating the tree. (I’ll be doing so while pulling all-nighters.) Enjoy!

EAR CANDY | Best Coast + Wavves Team Up For the Holidays

Lo-fi sunny wall-of-sound duo from the Sunshine Coast, Best Coast and Wavves, have teamed up and recorded a brand new track that will be featured on Target’s holiday album. “Got Something for You” is everything you’d expect from these two L.A.-based bands–simple and cheery and a whole lot of reverb make this song a hallmark for mistletoe season. You can listen to this track and a bunch of other new holiday songs written especially for Target over here.

UPDATE: (You can now click here for free download of Target’s holiday album, The Christmas Gig!)

Their cat, Snacks, also recently announced via his twitter that Best Coast and Wavves will be touring together next January and February (about time, if you ask me). And yes, their cat has his own twitter.

WHAT’S HOT: Lo-fi = the New Black

Best Coast (Los Angeles, CA)

Bethany Cosentino, multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno, and drummer Ali Koehler (formerly of Vivian Girls) make up this aptly-named beach-friendly trio. Having just released their debut record Crazy For You in July, this sun-soaked, summer-drenched, cheery surf-pop record will having you wishing it were summer all year round.

Sleigh Bells (Brooklyn, NY)

Signed to M.I.A.’s N.E.E.T record label, this school teacher/former girl-group singer and ex-member of the now defunct post-hardcore band, Poison the Well, show nothing of their former lives. Together, Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller make gritty yet beautiful, fuzzed-out blood-pumping music.

Jenny and Johnny (Los Angeles, CA)
http://www.myspace.com/jennyandjohnny

One of the few successful child actresses turned singers, Jenny Lewis made a name for herself as the Indie Queen in beloved Rilo Kiley. Her and longtime collaborator/boyfriend Johnathan Rice, a singer-songwriter himself, have joined forces to present Jenny and Johnny.  Their full-length LP, I’m Having Fun Now, isn’t out until August 31, but they’ve offered up 3 new tracks off the album and a free download of “Scissor Runner.”
