I’M OBSESSED | We Are Trees
The moment I saw that We Are Trees had a song entitled “Dear Chan Marshall,” I was all ‘hell yeah, I’m up for the ride.’ (I’m a huge Cat Power fan and any reference to her will get me giddy.) That fact alone, for me, warranted them a listen–and I was not disappointed.

I was lucky I’d stumbled across them relatively early and managed to grab a free download of their Boyfriend EP back in June of last year when they self-released it. (It’s now available for purchase as a digital download or as vinyl.) The 4 tracks are incredibly cohesive and while simple (tracks mostly consist of acoustic guitar, percussion, vox), they have this incredibly atmospheric aura to them.
James Nee‘s vocals have been compared to those of Grizzly Bear‘s Daniel Rossen. I guess I can hear the slight similarities, although it’s not something I would notice right away. But I guess Grizzly Bear fans should take note, because they might get into We Are Trees, too. Really, it’s hard not get caught up in Nee’s sweeping “ohs” and “ahs”; I can attest to that.
They’ve recently released their second EP, Girlfriend (of course), and I’m quite taken with it. It has more the lo-fi sound that was so popular last summer, so expect more fuzz in the mix and more fervent drumming. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still laid back as all hell, there’s just a little extra punch this time.

With exam season is winding down, everyone is gearing up for the summer. But when I listen to “Sunrise Sunset,” it makes me feel like the warm sunny months are already here.
